Growth of Ware
See how Ware has changed over the centuries, as the occupants and their way of life changed. Through the conquering and occupation of Britain by the Romans, Anglo-Saxons, Viking and Normans, Ware has been here on the crossing point of the River Lea for the road to the north of our island.
The River Lea
The crossing point of the river is the reason for Wareβs existence. Ware grew up at that point from the Bronze Age, or earlier, and has developed along the river since then.
Malting in Ware
Malting has been important to to Ware throughout its history. The surrounding farm land provided excellent barley for the work, but it was also Wareβs position on the River Lea which enhanced its reputation throughout the country.
