Collections

Ware Museum collects and preserves the heritage of Ware and the surrounding area. Our collections include archaeology, geology, photographs, social, industrial and cultural history, all telling the story of life in the town.

Research & Enquiries

We can provide information on the collection and local history of Ware and the surrounding area, including the villages of Great Amwell, Hunsdon, Stanstead Abbotts, Stanstead St. Margarets, Thundridge, Wadesmill, Wareside and Widford. For enquiries, please contact the museum at curator@waremuseum.org.uk or 01920 487848.

Please be aware that we may not be able to reply straight away but will endeavour to reply to your enquiry within 2 working weeks of receipt.

We are, unfortunately, not in a position to carry out detailed research for enquiries. We, however, will be able in some instances, to direct you to other museums and institutions who may be able to assist further.

Collections and reference material, if available, can be provided for research purposes.

If there is something you would like to research, please get in touch to find out if we have the resources you need.

Use of Images

Copies of photographs from the collection are available for purchase. Enquiries for commercial and non-commercial use can be made to manager@waremuseum.org.uk.

Donations of objects

The Museum collects objects with a connection to Ware and the surrounding area and the diverse collection has been ever increasing thanks to the kindness of donors.

We are always interested in hearing about any possible donations, but regret that we may not accept donations if they do not fill a gap within our collection, are a duplicate of what we already have, are in a poor condition, and/or if they do not have a clear local link.

Unfortunately, space is limited, and the museum must be selective before accepting objects. If we cannot accept your offer, please do not be offended. We will be able to explain why an object was not accepted in our correspondence. We may be able to give advice on alternative places to deposit.

How to donate an object

If you would like to offer an object to the museum, please contact the museum at curator@waremuseum.org.uk or 01920 487848 before bringing the object to us, explaining how you came to acquire the object and the object’s contextual history and, if via email, an image of the object.

This information will help us advise if it is suitable for the museum or if it would be better suited elsewhere, such as the Museum’s handling collection or another institution. We may ask that you bring the object into the museum for further inspection.
