Malting was dependant on the barley harvest which meant it was a seasonal craft. In order to continue to make a living, many maltmakers also worked at brickmaking the rest of the year. Ware has excellent brick earth available and the bricks made in Ware were used throughout the county, as well as in London. The extraction of the brick earth has left Ware with some interesting contours.
Caleb Hitch the Younger created a type of brick that became famous for its varied shapes and styles. Unfortunately, they were cumbersome and expensive to use so were limited in popularity. However, they have provided many interesting structures over the years, including the (Old Rose & Crown) in Watton Road.
